The Flu Shot Decision Article of the week November 13-17
Now that it's November the flu season is upon us and I'm seeing more opportunities in the community making it convenient for us to roll up our sleeves and receive an annual flu shot.
Whether or not to receive a flu shot is a controversial subject and you can get a different answer depending on the authority that you speak to. In no way do I want to judge any of you who choose to get the flu shot, however, I thought I would share my perspective on this polarizing subject and why I choose not to get a flu shot.
First and foremost, natural methods of prevention have been shown to be equally effective to getting the flu shot at preventing the flu. If you could only take one supplement that would reduce your chances of getting a flu this year, you will want it to be vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 supplementation has been shown to be a powerful intervention in strengthening your immune system and preventing the flu. Go to the following link in the British Medical Journal if you want more information: http://www.bmj.com/content/356/bmj.i6583
In the winter months when I'm not exposed to sun I take about 5000 I.U.'s of vitamin D3 per day as a supplement. Make sure that your vitamin D3 supplement has K2 in it as well. We carry an optimal vitamin D3/K2 supplement in the office for your convenience.
Another reason I decline a flu shot has to do with it's effectiveness. Over my 18 years as a chiropractor I've adjusted a lot of people who have the flu, most of whom have received a flu shot. Why is it that so many people who get a flu shot still get the flu? As it turns out, when public health officials are preparing vaccines for the upcoming flu season they are often guessing what strains are going to be active in the coming season. In many instances, the strain of flu that you are being given a vaccine for does not line up with the kind of virus that is currently circulating.
A study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that between 2005 and 2015 the flu vaccine was less than 50% effective more than half the time. Go to the following website if you want to see the study: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/vaccineeffect.htm. It has also been found that the benefit of the flu shot is even further diminished in those who get a flu shot every year. It has a greater chance of being effective if you have not received a shot in the last 5 years.
Finally, there is the issue of vaccine related injury. Getting a flu shot is not without risk. At one end of the spectrum you are at risk of minor injury including chronic pain at the injection site (often shoulder), nerve damage and frozen shoulder. In more severe, albeit rarer instances, flu shots can cause neurological impairment including a condition known as Guillan Barre syndrome where your immune system attacks your nerves leading to muscle weakness and even paralysis.
If you want to research this topic more before deciding whether or not to get a flu shot, I would suggest you go to the National Vaccine Information Center website. It is a great resource for information on risks and benefits. You can connect with the NVIC at the following link: http://www.nvic.org/
Above all else, make an informed decision. Do the research and ask the questions and make your own conclusions about your health.

For the first time in 10 years I didn't have a headache when I woke up - after only one adjustment!
Highly recommend Grace Chiropractic. Their approach to chiropractic care is truly life changing. Myself and my family have all been customers of Grace and have had excellent experiences. Since starting my program with Dr. Tim I have experienced significant relief and continue to receive treatments weekly!
I have been seeing Dr. Tim and his team since December 2016. I am grateful for every adjustment I've received. Instead of just treating your current ailment, Dr. Tim goes after the overall health of your spine and nervous system as you will learn at your info session. I came to Dr. Tim with tingling hands and numbness in both my arms, not only has this improved but I'd say by February I was feeling the best I've felt for the past 7 years.....body, mind and soul. And I have my Grace team, my denne roll and the few stretches Dr. Tim has given me to thank for it! So what are you waiting for.....give my Grace family a call today....you will not regret it!!
I have been attending Grace Chiropractic for many years now. Dr Tim was the first chiropractor I saw, and he is is much more than just a chiropractor. Dr Tim and the rest of the office staff are so focused on the well being, mind, body and soul, of each of their patients. You never walk into the office without a warm greeting, and you always leave with an uplifted spirit. Dr Tim not only makes adjustments and corrects any pain, but he gives you the tools to adjust your lifestyle to ensure you are the healthiest version of yourself. I am very grateful to all the staff at Grace Chiropractic!
